2008 DV/HD Award Nominees are in! (achievement)
THE TWO PRE-WINNERS ARE IN!

The 2008 Robert Rodriguez Award has been bestowed upon:

"LIKE MOLES, LIKE RATS"

Robert Rodriguez has a great story. He started off with no money and a love for filmmaking. After scraping together every dollar he could to make what he calls a "practice film"; his talent was immediately noticed and awarded with not only awards, but future projects. Determined that if he was going to break into Hollywood he wasn't going to panic when he got there, Robert has made an impact in the industry since 1991.  Holding 11 credits in his Hi-Def film "Once Upon a Time in Mexico", Robert Rodriguez is the epitome of a 'do what you got to do' and 'do it yourself' filmmaker that the Digital Video Festival exemplifies.  In low-budget filmmaking, you must utilize all your resources to make a good film.  We take everything into consideration, from financing to the story itself. We salute you, the DVF recipient of the Robert Rodriguez Award of Excellence.

The 2008 Festival Director's Choice Award goes to:

"FATAL REACTION"

- This category is based on the festival Director at the time, currently Tony Bracy, and his favorite choice that moved him emotionally and/or spiritually based on subject matter and his personal feelings.

1080i vs. 1080p
Less than meets the eye.

The most frequently asked questions I've received this year have been about the difference between 1080i and 1080p. Many people felt—or others erroneously told them—that their brand-new 1080p TVs were actually 1080i, as that was the highest resolution they could accept on any input. I did a blog post on this topic and received excellent questions, which I followed up on. It is an important enough question—and one that creates a significant amount of confusion—that I felt I should address it here, as well.

720p vs. 1080i
In an ongoing contest that pits space versus time, making opponents of what relativity unified about a century ago, HDTV (High Definition Television) experts love to debate what has come to be known as the 720p versus 1080i issue.

I Want My HDV

Compact and affordable, like Mini DV 10 years ago. Still feels like a pipe dream.

Or maybe a fever dream. Discussing the new HDV format stirs confusion because there are two flavors, three manufacturers and four camcorders. A major player, JVC, launched a popular 24p version of HDV that a year later none of the major nonlinear editing systems can readily capture. Plus there’s Panasonic’s compact P2 camcorder, the HVX200. It’s not HDV — as Panasonic reminds us at every turn — but belongs to this discussion because of its Handycam dimensions and autofocus zoom lens.
